Energy saving tips
Heating
Around 1/3 of your power bill in winter is heating your home. Dont leave heaters running in empty rooms. Don't leave heat pumps running 24/7, it will cost much more than running them a few hours per day.
Insulating your home will help to reduce heat losses:
- • 40% of your heating can be lost through the ceiling/roof in an un-insulated home
- • 20% of your heating can be lost through the walls in an un-insulated home
- • 15% of your heating can be lost through the floor in an un-insulated home
- • 20% of your heating can be lost through the windows
- • 10% of your heating can be lost through air gaps and ventilation - under doors, ducted rangehoods etc

Lighting
Approximately 10% of your power bill is lighting. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs. They are fine for most areas but not suited for places where you need bright light, such as reading areas and kitchens.
Computers
Like all appliances try not to leave computers in standby mode when they are not being used. Consider using a laptop computer - they use 80% less energy than a desktop.

Fridges
Check energy star labels when buying a new fridge. A new energy efficient fridge will use 1/2 as much energy as a 10 year old fridge.
Televisions
Modern flat panel televisions use 3 times more power than the old cathode ray tube type....
